APG Welcomes Review of WHS Act to ensure health and safety of all
Friday, 6th April 2018
Launched in 2013, the current Work Health and Safety Act reflected a new way of looking at safety governance and to address the changing nature of work in modern Australia. When launched, the new workplace safety laws aimed to provide greater consistency, certainty, and clarity across Australia making it clearer to comprehend your workplace health and safety duties.
Last month, Safe Work Australia launched a review of the national Work Health and Safety laws. The review is examining how the model WHS laws are operating in practice, whether they are achieving the objectives stated in the model WHS Act or if they have resulted in unintended consequences.
Independent reviewer Marie Boland who is leading the review highlighted the importance of WHS for all Australian workers.
“Everyone has the right to a safe and healthy workplace. The intention of the model work health and safety (WHS) laws is to support that right by providing workers in Australia with a consistent standard of health and safety protection wherever they work and whatever work they do. The model WHS laws are founded on the principle that workers and others should be given the highest level of protection through the elimination or minimization of risks arising from work, so far as is reasonably practicable."
